PSA: Regarding Adaptec 4300

Hey All, I don't most here too much, but wanted to give a "heads up". This weekend I ran into some firewire issues for the first time and struggled to get 6.7 solid after a re-install. Long story short, based on feedback here I went to Fry's and picked up an Adaptec 4300. Low and behold, they are no longer using TI chips on their boards, have eliminated half of the chip population (empty sockets) , and have replaced it with an "Agere" chipset. I only noticed this after re-installing PT about 6 times after continuous DAE Errors. I dug in my closet and found an old Pinnacle reference TI card, edited my registry, modifying the gap count, and I just bounced the Demo Song as a test with no hiccups. (hw playback buffer at 256). Prior to the removal of the Adaptec, I could bounce and/or playback for 15 seconds tops...it wasn't pretty. Hope this helps some of you out. The card is labled AFW-4300C and I have uploaded a pic here for ID:

I have the 4300C card as well. Luckily it is working well for me. I hate when they make a change and don't change the model number.

I have 2 different Siigs. Both are 3-port models, 1 is all external ports one has 1 internal and 2 external. They have TI chips and have never failed me.

Hey Screamer and SunOdRsn - Can you guys let us know a little more about your systems - I'm wondering why the new 4300 would work for some and not others..... and I'm about to open the hood and check out the 2 that I just installed this weekend! -Scott

PAE is off, ACPI on etc... For an update, I returned the Adaptec 4300C and replaced it with am ADS PYRO 64 that has a TI chipset on it. All is good. Major bummer that Adaptec went and changed their design.
