CCE guide - another question

I just switched to CCE from TMPGEnc and ReMpeg last week. Very happy with the encoding times (getting about 90% realtime on Athlon 1.4 per pass). Found this thread helpful and answered many of my question re the CCE guide. HOWEVER, I have one question about the .ecl file. Why is it necessary to use ChapterExtractor to paste the chapter list at the end of the file? I am importing the .chp file into Maestro anyway (when I author the .m2v) so can't understand why I need to do this. :confused: Ne1 shed any light on this?? Thx, cine.

cinephile, I don't think it is an essential part. Like you, I am just starting to use CCE. I have just done my very first movie. I ignored that part of the guide altogether. Imported my video and audio into Spruce Up. From there, you can set your own chapter points. However, I would be interested to hear from anyone who uses this particulat feature. I did find it a bit confusing to understand (but my head was starting to hurt a bit) HomerJ :)

you're doing that step in order to guarantee that the first frame of a new chapter is an I-frame. You can only fast forward (jump to a chapter) to an I-frame so it's imperative that the first frame when the new chapter starts is an I-frame or your chapter will be late, even if you import the correct chapter times in Maestro. Maestro will automatically select the nearest I-frame for each chapter position that you're importing. So.. only if you do the additional step in CCE AND import the chapter positions in Maestro will you be able to retain the original chapter positions.

Thx for the prompt feedback guys. That has answered my question completely, so will carry on doing that step. HomerJ, I used to use Spruce up to author but just got frustrated not being able to set chapter points accurately (and it took longer), so I switched to Maestro. :) Thx again for answering.
