Transfering from 2\" tape to HD

Hello compadres, Wondering if anyone has any tips on a transfer from a studer 24 track to hd. I have enough inputs, and my plan is to hook up the two machines via an elco patchbay and just record them directly. If anyone has any experience with this I'd love to hear from you! Cheers, Eric

Nothing to know. Just play them right in through a great converter that doesn't add any coloration. I've done it countless times and it's never been an issue.

Fellow Topangan ;-) Don't forget to bake those tapes if they are older than 5 years! Also, you might want to check levels going into PT. If tapes are not too hot you can try using the "b" input trims (in hardware setup). I'm pretty sure that the 192's are set up from the factory to be -20 on the "a" trims and -18 on the "b" trims (I could be wrong about the actual spec, but the "b" trims are usually hotter). I always transfer in as hot as possible to get ther best resolution (without any overs, of course)

Don't know if this applies, but if the tapes have any timecode or sync tracks, you'll want to make sure the machine is properly resolved on playback. If they're music only, shouldn't be any need to worry; just clean the machine before each pass. Bob

Don't laugh at baking the tape... it's the truth. If you don't know how talk to someone who does. If the tape is really old and in bad shape. If it's stored tails out, play it in reverse insted of rewinding and record that. That way if it dies on playback or would fall apart rewinding you can reverse the soundfile.
