OT: Creating Ringtones from PT to Phone?

i found this link now that i had some time after a session to do some research, good info for starters... maybe someone here can confirm this - am i understanding correctly that the ringtones are primarily standard midi files, and very few phones out there play actual audio files? but the industry is leaning towards audio file-based ringtones as the technology advances? so, a melody has to be created, midi data sent to conversion software and converted to several types of files in order to be compatible with the different polyphonic ringtone engines? do i have this right?

there is a good article from Electronic Musician on making ringtones for fun and profit. I was surprised at how many formats and flavors there are. The article is from last year, so perhaps things have settled out a bit since then.

I haven't posted here in awhile but this topic caught my eye. A friend of mine has had this running contract with a local fortune 500 company to design sound fx/melodies for their new line of cameras. He hired me to develop a batch when he was overloaded. I expected them to go with midi but they wanted audio files...low quality, of course, but audio. I believe they developed their own codec too. So my guess would be that the industry is steering towards audio and away from midi. that's my .02

so far i learned that some of the file formats required for capable real music mobile phones are SMAF, AMR, MP3 and WAV... are there any others i am missing? i know there are a ton of other formats that are midi-based, but i mainly am looking into the real music versions.

sorry, one more thing... i also see there are many methods out there on getting a real music ringtone to a compatible phone - bluetooth, IR, download-to-phone, etc.. as funny as this is, i can't find anyone i know lately that even has a realy music capible phone. man that is sad can anyone tell me if they have one and how they get real ringtones to their phone? i.e., download from site thru phone? download to computer and xfer? oh this whole thing gets deep... why can't there be one format and one method?? i know, that's asking too much
