To interlace or de-interlace SOURCE: DV....TARGET: DVD ?

Hi, 2 questions: If my source is NTSC DV (720x480, YUV 4:1:1), should I go for the de-interlace option in Premiere when frameserving to TMPGEnc for a DVD standard MPEG-2? The video in the timeline inside Premiere has lot of effects, transistions etc. BTW, in TMPGEnc, there are options that says "Non interlaced, Interlace". What does this mean and which option should I go if my DV source is frameserved from Premiere? Also, for Audio (48Khz 16bit), should I save the Audio as a WAV file from Premiere timeline OR use LAME to get the audio in TMPGEnc. I heard that LAME is very good in audio quality than TMPGEnc does. You will want to keep your audio as 48kHz 16bit and save it as a WAV. You do not want to encode your audio to MPEG as this is not valid for the DVD spec. If you have a Dolby Digital encoding option, you could encode the audio to a Dolby Digital AC3 file. As for the video, I'm afraid I've not worked with DV before. However, if your project is anything like that ones that I have done captuing interlaced NTSC stuff on my Pinnacle DVD1000 card, you do not have to touch any of the interlace settings. I would suggest leaving it as is. Of course, my card encodes to DVD MPEG2 as it captures and is in that format during my editing as well. I don't know if that makes any difference but Bitrate Viewer still reports it as interlaced. I never deinterlace any of my captures.

Stick to interlaced footage. Deinterlace by all means, but prepare for super-pixilisation and Lego effects on edges. It looks shit. I deal with interlaced footage all the time, it edits just fine in Premiere. And so long as TMPEG is set up to deal with interlaced footage, you'll get perfect results, so long as you are not vertically resizing the image. Just make sure you get the field order set up correctly. Do a couple of tests through TMPEG on 30 seconds of footage, get your settings right and then, as Jean-Luc Picard would probably say: "Engage". In terms of the audio, make a 48000 WAV as previously suggested. If space is an issue on your DVD, run that WAV through TMPEG as an audio only encode later. Easy.

I've made a couple of projects out of own DV-footage, deinterlaced with smartdeinterlace and encoded in CCE: when played back on tv with my Pioneer dv-444 there is absolutely no stuttering, jerkyness, whatever. It's perfect actually. The main reason I did deinterlace was that I have had some problems with the field order (CCE bug?) and even trying to use ReStream and whatnot to change back to lower field first didn't work apparently, looked awful on tv. So I stick with deinterlacing.
