Roof rails and roof box

Hi there...my 1st post. I have recently returned to the Volvo fold after buying a V70....Although it is nice and spacious when I go to dog shows the space shrinks a little. I am thinking of getting roof rails and roof box. Before I invest does anybody out there know what difference I would get as far as fuel consumption (diesel) goes? Regards

Closed i can offer advice with is a petrol V70 and the carrying of kayaks on the roof. I drove from Yorkshire to the Ardeche at about 110km/h and averaged 32mpg, with 2 kayaks on the roof (as can be seen in my avatar) On the way back I only had one boat, and no passenger so I was able to have nothing on the roof, this time i was able to do 120km/h and averaged just over 34mpg. I reckon that if you adjust your speed like that it doesn't make too much of a difference. If i'd driven with the stuff on the roof at 120km/h I think it would have averaged about 28 or so, so about a 10% reduction. Hope that helps Ed

Could anyone tell me please whether we can get roof bars for a roof box for a Volvo S70? (1997) We have been given a universal fitting box but there doesn't seem to be anywhere on the roof to fit bars. (It's a saloon by the way)

Check on the Thule web site. I use Thule bars and box on my S60.

My previous volvo was an 850 saloon for I had roof bars that I got from Volvo as they were just as cheap (or dear) than non genuine ones. They fit into a hole in the roof that is visible with the doors open. Gary

Unrelated, I know... But putting a Roofrack on my Land Rover 110 Station wagon, decreased the fuel consumption by 1.5mpg. OK its doesnt sound much, but when you get 24mpg on a good day, it makes a difference (at approx 14p per mile) over the year. On a Volvo, it will not be so marked. However, I wouldnt run with it on all year round, as you will pay for the fuel to push it through the air!. Oh,.. and that was with nothing on the roofrack... ie just having the rack on the vehicle. Make you think!! GEoff
